The GAT series was developed by the Earth Alliance to rival ZAFT's own mass-produced ZGMF-1017 GINN in an attempt to even the battlefield. Experimental model 105 was created with the help of Orb's Morgenroete company, which was built alongside a number of other experimental models on Earth and was shipped to the Heliopolis space colony during the final stages of it's development. There, it was involved in a hijacking attempt by ZAFT soldiers, which ended with the theft of four other experimental models; the Strike Gundam emerged from the debacle with a young Coordinator by the name of Kira Yamato.

After the collapse of Heliopolis, Kira became the main pilot for the Strike onboard the Archangel. He piloted it until April 17th, CE 71, when the Strike was destroyed in a climactic battle with the GAT-X303 Aegis Gundam and Kira was left MIA. Orb gathered the remains of the mobile suit and rebuilt it with the help of previously collected data from the mobile suit. They also developed a physically identical unit, the MBF-02 Strike Rouge, though it had more upgraded features. Upon the Archangel's return to Orb after fleeing JOSH-A in Alaska, the crew was presented with the rebuilt Strike Gundam and was offered to Kira, but turned it down in favor of his newly acquired mobile suit, the ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam. Instead, fellow Archangel pilot Mwu la Fllaga took up the offer to pilot it, and he did so until his unfortunate end when he sacrificed his life to protect the Archangel from a devastating blast. The Strike Gundam was completely destroyed and pilot Mwu la Fllaga was assumed KIA.
